Travel & Transportation

Air

We expect that almost all of our guests will be traveling by plane. San Diego International Airport (SAN) flies direct to/from New York (JFK), San Francisco (SFO), San Jose (SJC), and many other domestic airports. Flights from Sydney (SYD) and other Australian destinations are available with connections through Los Angeles (LAX) and Hawaii (HNL).

Land

Once you're here, we recommend coordinating car rentals with friends and family, as San Diego is a driving city. Public transportation options are limited and there is much to do if you will be staying for any time beyond the wedding day.

Uber, Lyft and city taxis are also available throughout San Diego/La Jolla and can take you anywhere. The estimated fare between the wedding venue in La Jolla and the airport is $25-40.

Sea

Sea turtles periodically surface around La Jolla Shores. Kayaks are also available for rental.

Where to Stay

For our friends and family who are able to coordinate their stay, the most affordable option is to reserve an entire home or condo in the area on AirBnB or VRBO. If you choose this option, be sure to consider any reviews left for the property you choose. If you have children, be sure to notify the proprietor of the number of children that will stay, prior to booking, in case there are any additional restrictions or considerations.

Hotels we recommend in the immediate vicinity of the Martin Johnson House include Hotel La Jolla (a 1.2 mile walk to the venue), La Jolla Shores Hotel (a 1.1 mile walk) and La Estancia (a 1.6 mile walk/ride). Third party booking sites like hotels.com may have cheaper rates than those posted on the hotel websites.

Whatever option you choose, we highly recommend booking as soon as you have arranged your flights, as August is high tourist and wedding season in our area. Accommodations book up far in advance and quickly become more expensive.

What to Do

There is so much to do in and around the San Diego area! La Jolla is famous for its beaches and August should be lovely for some beach fun, where you can swim, work on your tan, go on a kayak tour of the sea caves, learn to surf (please don't die), or visit the seals (they are stinky!) and beach squirrels.

San Diego Zoo is widely known as the #1 zoo in the world. Located in Balboa Park down town, you can visit animals of every variety. Additionally, at the affiliated Safari Park, located in Escondido about 40 minutes drive from La Jolla, you can watch a cheetah race after a toy bunny (please don't drop your child into the enclosure), and feed lorikeets nectar in their enclosure. Julian had at least 3 birds land on him when we did this!

The Birch Aquarium at Scripps is also lovely and walking distance from the Martin Johnson House.

San Diego is a military city, with the U.S.S. Midway aircraft carrier available for public tours.

There are great museums in San Diego, many of which are in Balboa Park down town, including the Natural History Museum, the Model Railroad Museum, the New Children's Museum and the Fleet Science Center.

Also, Legoland is located in Carlsbad approximately 35 minutes drive from La Jolla.

San Diego also has great farmers markets down town on weekends in Hillcrest (Sunday), Gaslamp district (Sunday), and Little Italy (Saturday). Enjoy freshly caught sea urchin right out of the shell, if you are so inclined! The vegetarians among us will also find a wonderful variety of fruits, flowers and more.

For dining and shopping options, La Jolla has a number of upscale options located around its walkable down town area. Additionally, hundreds of Asian food establishments of every variety are located in and around Kearney Mesa (approximately 15 minutes drive from La Jolla). Our favorite is Yakyudori for ramen and most excellent yakitori. Lastly, the North Park area closer to down town San Diego (centered around 30th St. and University Ave) has numerous trendy restaurants, stores, bars and coffee shops. There are also often street fairs on weekends in the North Park area.
